Abstract

In the closed stack area of the Louisiana Room of Dupre Library at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, three librarians met in the early spring of 1986. This chance meeting of two public service librarians and a cataloger led to a discussion of the needs of local researchers and the difficulty of locating articles in Louisiana publications. State periodicals contain a rich variety of articles about local customs and cuisine, economic conditions, and politics. Generally, the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature does not index these periodicals, and this often frustrates patrons who are looking for information on local topics. Many libraries, including the Dupre Library, keep vertical files of pamphlets and newspaper clippings to fill this gap. But such files are time‐consuming to maintain, their contents are too often fragmentary, and each file moreover serves only one institution.

Abstract

The overall goal of science is to build a valid and reliable body of knowledge about the functioning of the world and how applying that knowledge can change it. As personnel and human resources management researchers, we aim to contribute to the respective bodies of knowledge to provide both employers and employees with a workable foundation to help with those problems they are confronted with. However, what research on research has consistently demonstrated is that the scientific endeavor possesses existential issues including a substantial lack of (a) solid theory, (b) replicability, (c) reproducibility, (d) proper and generalizable samples, (e) sufficient quality control (i.e., peer review), (f) robust and trustworthy statistical results, (g) availability of research, and (h) sufficient practical implications. In this chapter, we first sing a song of sorrow regarding the current state of the social sciences in general and personnel and human resources management specifically. Then, we investigate potential grievances that might have led to it (i.e., questionable research practices, misplaced incentives), only to end with a verse of hope by outlining an avenue for betterment (i.e., open science and policy changes at multiple levels).

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to characterize the suitability of a direct extrusion process in the fused layer manufacturing (FLM)-method under processing of granulated plastics.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, a granulate-based direct extrusion system in the FLM method is presented. This system is characterized with respect to the strand deposition mechanism and resulting component properties (geometrically and mechanically).

Findings

The extruder output could be identified as a linear relation between the applied extruder speed and the resulting mass flow. A developed model for the material and temperature-dependent strand deposition process was validated under experimental investigations. Further, it was possible to define process windows to realize desired strand widths and strand heights. In addition, analyses were conducted to determine the tensile strength transversely to the orientation of the layer plane.

Research limitations/implications

The extrusion system was characterized under the processing of materials ABS Magnum 8434 and PLA Ingeo 4043D. Due to the restricted choice of materials, further investigations are planned under an extension of the test materials. Furthermore, the degree of the geometric complexity of the test components should be increased to finally characterize the process.

Originality/value

By means of the characterization of the direct extrusion system, it is possible for users to classify the process and to use the process in specific application areas. In comparison to filament-based extrusion systems, significant advantages can be achieved by means of direct extrusion. These include, for example, the use of less expensive work materials (by factor >10), the use of existing test certificates and the advantage of higher mechanical properties. This makes it possible to meet modern product requirements and to produce competitive components.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to provide insights on Albert J. Mills' and Jean Helms Mills' lifelong methodological journey in the airline culture. The interview offers a retrospective and reflective insight of their research into organizational culture and the airline industry, reasons for this research, their methodological journey, challenges they faced and ways forward.

Design/methodology/approach

This article is based on an interview with Albert J. Mills and Jean Helms Mills, which was virtually conducted for a professional development workshop (PDW) at the 2020 Academy of Management Meeting.

Findings

Albert J. Mills and Jean Helms Mills provide insights and reflections on their lifelong methodological journey, focusing organizational culture, discriminatory practices, and the impact of this on what constitutes men and women's work.

Originality/value

This paper draws from Albert J. Mills' and Jean Helms Mills' lifelong experience in studying gender, intersectionality and historiography in airline cultures. Scholars will be encouraged by their insights on how to start a long-term study, potential challenges, impacts of current trends and how to deal with them.

Abstract

Purpose

The mechanical characterization of selective laser melting (SLM) parts is an industrial challenge. This paper aims to propose a methodology to control the fatigue life of 17-4Ph stainless steel by selecting the most relevant manufacturing parameters: i.e. laser power, laser travel speed, hatch spacing and laser defocusing.

Design/methodology/approach

A rough and refined design of experiment (DOE) is carried out to target the best combination of process parameters. A response surface model is then constructed to predict the parameter combination that optimizes the fatigue performance.

Findings

This study results show that the fatigue limit of the specimens manufactured by SLM (471.7 MPa at 107 cycles) has reached near 90% of the value found in samples machined from a bar. This demonstrates the applicability of the method proposed to optimize the SLM process and control the fatigue life of 17-4Ph stainless steel. The study results are compared with other research works and provide an increase of 18% to the fatigue limit.

Originality/value

This study showcases a DOE methodology to optimize the SLM parameters to achieve fatigue performance as great as that of solid 17-4Ph stainless steel.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the supply chain learning (SCL)–performance relationship based on the existing empirical evidence.

Design/methodology/approach

We sampled 54 empirical studies on the SCL–performance relationship. We proposed a conceptual research framework and adopted a meta-analytical approach to analyse the SCL–performance relationship.

Findings

The results of the meta-analysis confirm the positive effects of SCL on the performance of both firms and supply chains. In addition, building on the knowledge-based view, we found that learning from customers has a stronger positive effect on performance than does learning from suppliers, while joint learning has a stronger positive effect on performance than does absorptive learning. Business knowledge had a greater effect on performance than did general knowledge, process knowledge or technical knowledge, while explicit knowledge had a stronger effect than tacit knowledge. Moreover, the SCL–performance relationship is moderated by performance measure and industry type but not by regional economic development, highlighting the broad applicability of SCL.

Originality/value

This study is the first meta-analysis on the SCL–performance relationship. It differentiates between learning from customers and learning from suppliers, examines a more comprehensive list of performance measures and tests five moderators to the main effect, significantly contributing to the SCL literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Thin conducting sheets are used in many electric and electronic devices. Solving numerically the eddy current problems in presence of these thin conductive sheets requires a very fine mesh which leads to a large system of equations, and it becomes more problematic in case of higher frequencies. The purpose of this paper is to show the numerical pertinence of equivalent models for 3D eddy current problems with a conductive thin layer of small thickness e based on the replacement of the thin layer by its mid-surface with equivalent transmission conditions that satisfy the shielding purpose, and by using an efficient discretization using the boundary element method (BEM) to reduce the computational work.

Design/methodology/approach

These models are solved numerically using the BEM and some numerical experiments are performed to assess the accuracy of the proposed models. The results are validated by comparison with an analytical solution and a numerical solution by the commercial software Comsol.

Findings

The error between the equivalent models and analytical and numerical solutions confirms the theoretical approach. In addition to this accuracy, the computational work is reduced by considering a discretization method that requires only a surface mesh.

Originality/value

Based on a hybrid formulation, the authors present briefly a formal derivation of impedance transmission conditions for 3D thin layers in eddy current problems where non-conductive materials are considered in the interior and the exterior domain of the sheet. BEM is adopted to discretize the problem as there is no need for volume discretization.

This paper offers a general survey of accounting literature in the French language area of the first half of the 20th century: After a general Introduction, referring mainly to renowned French authors of past centuries, it deals first with historical accounting research (Dupont, de Roover, Gomberg, Vlaemminck, etc). Then come publications in financial accounting theory and its application (Faure, Dumarchey, Delaporte, Penglaou, de Fages de Latour, etc.), followed by a section on cost accounting and managerial control (Julhiet, de Fage de Latour, Detoeuf, Satet, Bournisien, Brunei, Sauvegrai, etc.). Alarger Section is devoted to inflationary problems (Delavelle, Raffegeau and Lacout, Bayard, Léger, Faure, Thomas, Bisson, Dumarchey, Durand, Beaupère, Ratier, etc.). Another large section refers to charts of accounts and public supervision (Otlet, Faure, Blairon, Detoeuf, Caujolle, Fourastié, Gabriel, Chardonnet, Gamier, etc.). The paper closes with a concise general conclusion about this period of transition from a mainly traditional agricultural to an industrial society with its costing problems, its organizational control, and its greater service orientation.
